With ‘afterall, eclipse’, Mischa Kuball invites us to explore the interfaces between light, space and social discourse. The conceptual artist has been using light as a medium to explore architectural spaces and their social and political dimensions since 1977.
His works - installations, light boxes and photographic works - turn light into a metaphor for transitions, transformations and the duality of visibility and concealment. What appears clear and reduced reveals multi-layered narratives on closer inspection.
Mischa Kuball (*1959, Düsseldorf) is Professor of Public Art at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. His major projects include ‘Platon's Mirror’ (2011-2015), which was shown at the ZKM - Centre for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, as well as ‘five planets’ (2015) at the Museum Folkwang and ‘res.o.nant’ at the Jewish Museum Berlin (2017-2019). In 2016, he was honoured with the German Light Art Prize. His works are represented in renowned collections, including the Museum Folkwang, the Kunstsammlung NRW and the Jewish Museum in New York.
