Die heutige Wahrnehmung von Emil Nolde (1867–1956) ist durch historische Mythenbildung geprägt. Lange als verfemter Maler angesehen, wurde kürzlich seine antisemitische und opportunistische Haltung publik. Der Düsseldorfer Konzeptkünstler Mischa Kuball (*1959) hat sich mit Unterstützung der Nolde Stiftung Seebüll, auf die Spuren dieser ambivalenten Künstlerpersönlichkeit begeben und sich kritisch mit Werk und Wirkung Emil Noldes auseinandergesetzt. Erste Ergebnisse waren im Winter 2020/2021 in der Draiflessen Collection in Mettingen zu sehen.

Auf Einladung des documenta archivs in Kassel setzte Kuball diese Spurensuche fort. Das forschungsbasierte Ausstellungsprojekt "nolde/kritik/documenta" beleuchtet die Verschränkung von Werk und Biografie und fragt nach den Widersprüchlichkeiten der Moderne, die in der Künstlerfigur Emil Nolde exemplarisch hervortreten.

Der Katalog "nolde/kritik/documenta" erscheint begleitend zur Ausstellung im Kasseler Fridericianum (9.12.2022–19.02.2023) in erweiterter Neuauflage und kann für 42 Euro direkt bei DCV erworben werden.

Am 19. Januar 2023 lädt das documenta archiv zur ersten Prodiumsdiskussion im Rahmen der Ausstellung "nolde/kritik/documenta" ein. Die Veranstaltung kreist um Fragen der Aneignung indigener Kulturen um 1900 im Kontext des Expressionismus. Zu diesem Thema wird Prof. Dr. Rebekka Habermas von der Universität Göttingen zunächst einen Vortrag halten und anschließend ins Gespräch mit Dr. Astrid Becker (Stellvertretende Direktorin, Nolde Stiftung Seebüll), Dr. Birgitta Coers (Direktorin, documenta archiv), Mischa Kuball und den Besuchenden gehen.

Im zweiten Gespräch, am 9. Februar 2023, wird es um die ambivalente Biografie Emil Noldes, die exemplarisch für das problematische Verhältnis von Werk und Autor steht, gehen. Die euphorische Rezeption seiner Malerei soll vor dem Hintergrund der frühen documenta Ausstellungen und der Kunstgeschichtsschreibung diskutiert werden.

Beide Veranstaltungen finden in der Rotunde des Fridericianums statt.

1991 hat die Stadt Pulheim mit dem Kunstprojekt Synagoge Stommeln einen dauerhaften Prozess der Auseinandersetzung mit dem historisch bedeutsamen Ort angestoßen, um einen Beitrag zu einer Kultur der Erinnerung zu leisten. Abseits des laufenden Kulturbetriebs nehmen immer wieder internationale Künstlerinnen und Künstler die Herausforderung an, Arbeiten für das versteckt gelegene, stille Gebäude mit dem prägenden historischen Kontext zu entwickeln. 

Anlässlich des 30-jährigen Bestehens der Kunstprojekte in der Synagoge ist ein umfassender Überblick über die Reihe besonderer Werke entstanden, die Publikation "ein ort – ein raum – eine arbeit. 30 Jahre Kunstprojekte in der Synagoge Stommeln". Am 21. Januar 2023 wird sie der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt: In ihren Vorträgen blicken der Kunsthistoriker Prof. Christoph Schreier und der Künstler Mischa Kuball zurück auf die 30-jährige Projektgeschichte und die Entstehung des Buches. Um Anmeldung wird gebeten.

Mischa Kuball hat sich in seinem Beitrag (U) für eine künstlerische Intervention in den Diskurs "Aufbruch der Kunst – Ende des Kunstbegriffs?" im Mythos-Magazin entschieden. Eine Intervention, die frei zwischen den Assoziationen oszilliert, die Antworten imaginieren, aber grundsätzliche Fragen aufwerfen.

Seit 2005 veröffentlicht das Mythos-Magazin Texte aus den Bereichen Mythosforschung, Ideologieforschung und Erklärende Hermeneutik.

Unaufhörlich tanzen Buchstaben über die Wände. Erst nach konzentrierter Betrachtung sind die Namen der fünf Planeten Jupiter, Mars, Merkur, Saturn und Venus lesbar, die der Künstler Mischa Kuball (*1959) für five planets auf Discokugeln projiziert. Die zurückgeworfenen Lichtstrahlen nehmen ihre Umgebung ein und verbinden Sprache, Licht und Raum. Das Museum Folkwang präsentiert die Arbeit seit Dezember 2022 im Rahmen der Sammlungspräsentation NEUE WELTEN. Dort hat sich five planets zu einem wahren Publikumsliebling entwickelt.

Today's perception of Emil Nolde (1867–1956) is shaped by historical myth-making. Long considered an ostracized painter, his anti-Semitic and opportunistic attitude recently became public. The Düsseldorf conceptual artist Mischa Kuball (*1959) set out on the traces of this ambivalent artist personality and critically examined Emil Nolde's work and impact with the support of the Nolde Foundation Seebüll. First results were on view in the winter of 2020/2021 at the Draiflessen Collection in Mettingen.

Kuball continued his research at the invitation of the documenta archive, Kassel. Based on his findings, the exhibition project "nolde/kritik/documenta" illuminates the ways in which life and oeuvre are interwoven and inquires into the contradictions of modernism, which Emil Nolde as a man and artist may be said to have embodied.

The catalog "nolde/kritik/documenta" will be published in an expanded and revised edition to accompany the exhibition at the Fridericianum in Kassel (9.12.2022–19.02.2023) and can be purchased directly from DCV for 42 euros.

On January 19, 2023, the documenta archiv cordially invites interested visitors to the first panel discussion in the context of the exhibition "nolde/criticism/documenta". The event will revolve around questions of the appropriation of indigenous cultures around 1900 in the context of Expressionism. On this topic, Prof. Dr. Rebekka Habermas from the University of Göttingen will first give a lecture and then enter into conversation with Dr. Astrid Becker (Deputy Director, Nolde Stiftung Seebüll), Dr. Birgitta Coers (Director, documenta archiv), Mischa Kuball and the visitors.

The second discussion, on February 9, 2023, will focus on Emil Nolde's ambivalent biography, which exemplifies the problematic relationship between work and author. The euphoric reception of his painting will be discussed against the background of the early documenta exhibitions and art historiography.

Both events will take place in the Rotunda of the Fridericianum.

In 1991, the city of Pulheim initiated the art project Synagogue Stommeln, a permanent process of dealing with the historically significant site in order to contribute to a culture of remembrance. Away from the ongoing cultural scene, international artists repeatedly take up the challenge of developing works for the hidden, quiet building with its formative historical context. 

On the occasion of the 30 year anniversary of the art projects in the synagogue, a comprehensive overview of the series of special works has been produced, the publication "ein ort – ein raum – eine arbeit. 30 Jahre Kunstprojekte in der Synagoge Stommeln." It will be presented to the public on January 21, 2023: In their lectures, art historian Prof. Christoph Schreier and artist Mischa Kuball will look back on the 30-year project history and the genesis of the book. Registration is requested.

In his contribution (U) Mischa Kuball has chosen an artistic intervention in the discourse Aufbruch der Kunst – Ende des Kunstbegriffs?" in the Mythos magazine. An intervention that oscillates freely between associations that imagine answers but raise fundamental questions.

Since 2005, Mythos Magazine has published texts from the fields of myth research, ideology research, and explanatory hermeneutics.

Letters dance incessantly across the walls. Only if we look more closely do the names of the planets Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, Saturn and Venus become legible, names that artist Mischa Kuball projects onto mirror balls for his five planets. The reflected rays of light capture their surroundings, combining language, light and space. The Museum Folkwang presents the work since December 2022 as part of the collection presentation NEUE WELTEN. There, five planets has become a real public's favorite.
