Das transnationale Projekt if walls could tell hinterfragt Kunstinstitutionen im Hinblick auf ihre Durchlässigkeit zu breiteren sozialen Gruppen innerhalb einer Gemeinschaft. Über einen Zeitraum von jeweils zwei bis vier Wochen werden in verschiedenen Städten Südosteuropas drei symbolische Museumswände im öffentlichen Raum installiert, wo sie als zugängliche und temporäre Bühne für die Einwohner dienen. Wie ein Filter werden diese Wände alle "Spuren" kultureller und urbaner Ausdrucksformen inmitten des städtischen Lebens der Menschen auffangen, weg von den kulturellen Institutionen, auf die sie sich beziehen. Einmal von der Umwelt und den Menschen geprägt, kehrt die Bühne dann in ihren institutionellen Kontext zurück, um die hinterlassenen Spuren zu sichern oder weiter zu beschriften.

Der Prozess wird in allen Partnerstädten wiederholt, begonnen am 27. August 2024 im Nationalmuseum des rumänischen Bauern in Bukarest, gefolgt von Skopje, Kraljevica, Bihać, Čačak, Ljubljana, Chișinău und Cetinje. In jeder der Partnerstädte werden die Wände nach ihrer Installation im öffentlichen Raum in das Museum oder die Galerie zurückkehren, wo Podiumsdiskussionen stattfinden werden, um die Auswirkungen der partizipativen Kunst im öffentlichen Raum in ihrem spezifischen Kontext zu thematisieren. Das Projekt wird im WELTKUNSTZIMMER in Düsseldorf enden, wo die Abschlussdiskussion mit allen Partnern stattfinden wird.

Das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Skopje ist der letzte Veranstaltungsort in diesem Jahr, nachdem das Projekt diesen Sommer in Sarajevo und Bukarest gestartet wurde. Das Projekt wird im Januar in Chișinău fortgesetzt.

Skopje ist weithin als „Stadt der Denkmäler“ bekannt, doch fehlt es der Stadt an geeigneten öffentlichen Räumen für bürgerschaftliches Engagement. Auf dieser Grundlage findet am Samstag, dem 21.12. eine Podiumsdiskussion im MoCA statt. Die zentrale Frage lautet: Wie kann partizipative Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Debatten anstoßen, die symbolisch den Beginn des Prozesses der Schaffung eines „Denkmals“ (Jochen Gerz) markieren? Und wie könnte diese Form der künstlerischen Praxis in einer Stadt wahrgenommen werden, die mit „Bronzeskulpturen“ übersättigt ist, die eine auf Mythologie basierende Erzählung verstärken, anstatt die sozialen Realitäten einer ethnisch geteilten Stadt und eines ethnisch geteilten Landes zu reflektieren?

The transnational project if walls could tell questions art institutions in terms of their permeability to broader social groups within a community. Over a period of two to four weeks, three symbolic museum walls will be installed in public spaces in various cities in South Eastern Europe, where they will serve as an accessible and temporary stage for the inhabitants. Like a filter, these walls will catch all “traces” of cultural and urban expressions in the midst of people's urban lives, away from the cultural institutions to which they refer. Once marked by the environment and the people, the stage will then return to its institutional context to secure or further inscribe the traces left behind.

The process will be repeated in all partner cities, starting on August 27, 2024 at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, followed by Skopje, Kraljevica, Bihać, Čačak, Ljubljana, Chișinău and Cetinje. In each of the partner cities, the walls will return to the museum or gallery after their installation in the public space, where panel discussions will be held to address the impact of participatory art in public space in their specific context. The project will end at the WELTKUNSTZIMMER in Düsseldorf, where the final discussion with all partners will take place.

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje is the last venue this year, after the project was launched this summer in Sarajevo and Bucharest. The project will continue in Chișinău in January.

Skopje is widely known as a “city of monuments”, but the city lacks suitable public spaces for civic engagement. On this basis, a panel discussion will take place at MoCA on Saturday, December 21. The central question is: How can participatory art in public spaces initiate debates that symbolically mark the beginning of the process of creating a “monument” (Jochen Gerz)? And how might this form of artistic practice be perceived in a city saturated with “bronze sculptures” that reinforce a narrative based on mythology rather than reflecting the social realities of an ethnically divided city and country?
