Das Weltkunstzimmer Düsseldorf schließt in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler Mischa Kuball sein einjähriges Projekt space_relations mit der Abschlusspräsentation How to make friends ab. Im Laufe des Jahres 2025 entwickelte sich das Projekt zu einem offenen Laboratorium, in dem mehr als 30 Künstler, Theoretiker und Kulturschaffende aus verschiedenen Disziplinen zusammenkamen, um Modelle von Kollaboration, Communities auf Zeit und gemeinsamer Autorenschaft zu erproben.
space_relations untersucht die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen urbanem Raum, Gesellschaft und künstlerischer Praxis. Im Laufe des Jahres 2025 brachte das Projekt Künstler, Theoretiker und die Öffentlichkeit in ortsspezifischen Interventionen, Performances und diskursiven Formaten zusammen. Als letztes Kapitel feiert How to make friends den experimentellen Charakter des Projekts mit neue Modellen der Zusammenarbeit, interdisziplinären Begegnungen und der Initiierung von Netzwerken in der Stadt und darüber hinaus.
Die teilnehmenden Künstler von How to make friends sind: Elvire Bonduelle, Rada Boukova, Bidisha Das, Daniela Georgieva, Wanda Koller, Robin Meier, David JongSung Myung, Daria Nazarenko & Moïse Fall, Yoshinari Nishiki, Denise Ritter, Mohamad Moe Sabbah, Katja Stuke & Oliver Sieber, Luca Thiel, Louretta & Dr. Schmitt.
Am Freitag, dem 19. September, lädt das Weltkunstzimmer dann in Ko-Kuration mit Lea Schleiffenbaum, Mischa Kuball und Janine Blöß zu einem besonderen Stadtrundgang ein: Der Urban Space Theory Walk öffnet die Stadt als Diskursraum. An 4 Stationen im öffentlichen Raum und einem künstlerischen Input (senso-reflektorisches Schlendern in mehreren Akten) geben Experten diskursive und künstlerische Impulse zu aktuellen Fragen von Stadt, Raum und Zusammenleben – gefolgt von kurzen Gesprächen mit dem Publikum. Die Impulsvorträge finden in Deutscher Sprache statt, Englische Handreichungen sind verfügbar.
Mit diskursiven und künstlerischen Beiträgen von Eva Busch, Mary Dellenbaugh-Losse, Balz Isler, Alexis Rodriguez Suarez und Mirjam Zadoff werden Themen wie multiperspektivische Erzählungen, macht- und erinnerungskritische Räume, gemeinwohlorientierte Stadtentwicklung, Commons und Cultural Memory, Allianzen, Solidarität und Ansätze künstlerischer Raumpraktiken verhandelt.
Die Teilnahme an den Veranstaltungen ist kostenfrei, eine Anmeldung ist nicht notwendig.

Neben Kriegen, weltweiten Fluchtbewegungen, und einem sich ausdehnenden Vertrauensverlust in Demokratien dominiert vor allem die menschengemachte Klimakatastrophe das Denken und Handeln Vieler. Jenseits von Zynismus und Weltuntergangsstimmung sollte jedoch ein auf Solidarität und Gemeinsamkeit basierendes Zusammenleben als Grundlage für ein zivilisatorisches und ökologisches Überleben möglich sein. Gerade in den ersten beiden Jahrzehnten des 21. Jahrhunderts sind es vor allem Künstler, die solche Gedanken in ihren Werken aufgreifen und den Diskurs um mögliche Utopien vorantreiben.
Das vom Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg initiierte Ausstellungs- und Publikationsprojekt Utopia. Recht auf Hoffnung will ein Zeichen der Hoffnung und der Zuversicht setzen, wie ein besseres und gerechteres Leben für alle auf diesem Planeten gelingen kann. Dabei geht es nicht um den neuen großen Weltentwurf, sondern vielmehr um eine Vielzahl von Mikro-Utopien, die in ihrer Gesamtheit etwas Positives bewirken können. Im Zentrum von Utopia stehen deshalb vor allem künstlerische Werke, aber auch architektonische Entwürfe, Objekte des Designs und Beispiele aus dem angewandten Bereich, die utopische Projekte oder Ideen innerhalb verschiedener Medien vorstellen. Mischa Kuball ist in der Ausstellung vertreten durch eine Reproduktion seiner Arbeit DYS(U)TOPIA von 2021.

Als mittelgroße Kreisstadt verfügt Monheim am Rhein, gelegen zwischen Köln und Düsseldorf, über eine beeindruckende Sammlung an Kunstwerken im öffentlichen Raum. Internationale Größen haben hier Projekte realisiert, die von klassischer Skulptur über Licht- und Klangkunst bis hin zu einem künstlichen Geysir reichen. So wird eine große Bandbreite dessen erlebbar, was Kunst im öffentlichen Raum heute sein kann. Die Hauptwerke, entstanden von 2018 bis 2024, werden nun in einem Bestandskatalog präsentiert. Mit Werken von Tony Cragg, Angela de Weijer, inges idee, Jeppe Hein, Saman Hidayat, Thomas Kesseler, Mischa Kuball, Markus Lüpertz, Thomas Stricker, Timm Ulrichs und Robert Wilson.

Der Sammelband thematisiert Stadtbilder und Stadtentwürfe in künstlerischen Experimenten und ästhetischen Auseinandersetzungen der historischen Avantgarden in den 1920er und frühen 1930er Jahren, insbesondere im Verbund mit den technischen Medien Fotografie und Film. Deren historische Voraussetzungen, Einflüsse und Wirkungen werden auf internationaler Ebene rekapituliert und aus heutiger Perspektive neu befragt. Dabei nehmen die Aufsätze und künstlerischen Beiträge, darunter Mischa Kuballs Beitrag making things (very) public, zugleich zeitgenössische Projekte von Künstlern, Fotografen und Filmemachern in den Blick, für die der städtische Raum der Moderne ebenso wie die künstlerischen Experimente und Verfahren der Avantgarden – gleichsam historisch geworden – zum Gegenstand zeitgenössischer Rekonstruktion, (kritischer) Wiederaufnahme und ästhetischer Neubefragung werden.

In collaboration with artist Mischa Kuball, Weltkunstzimmer Düsseldorf is concluding its year-long project space_relations with the final presentation How to make friends. Over the course of 2025, the project developed into an open laboratory in which more than 30 artists, theorists, and cultural practitioners from various disciplines came together to experiment with models of collaboration, temporary communities, and joint authorship.
space_relations explores the interrelationships between urban space, society, and artistic practice. Throughout 2025, the project brought together artists, theorists, and the public in site-specific interventions, performances, and discursive formats. As its final chapter, How to make friends celebrates the experimental nature of the project with new models of collaboration, interdisciplinary encounters, and the initiation of networks in the city and beyond.

On Friday, September 19, Weltkunstzimmer, in co-curation with Lea Schleiffenbaum, Mischa Kuball, and Janine Blöß, invites you to a special city tour: The Urban Space Theory Walk opens up the city as a space for discourse. At four stations in public spaces and with artistic input (sensory-reflective strolling in several acts), experts provide discursive and artistic impulses on current issues relating to the city, space, and coexistence—followed by short discussions with the audience. The keynote speeches will be held in German, with English handouts available.
With discursive and artistic contributions by Eva Busch, Mary Dellenbaugh-Losse, Balz Isler, Alexis Rodriguez Suarez, and Mirjam Zadoff, topics such as multi-perspective narratives, spaces critical of power and memory, public welfare-oriented urban development, commons and cultural memory, alliances, solidarity, and approaches to artistic spatial practices will be negotiated.
Participation in the events is free of charge and registration is not required.

In addition to wars, global refugee movements, and an expanding loss of trust in democracies, it is above all the man-made climate catastrophe that dominates the thoughts and actions of many. Beyond cynicism and doom and gloom, however, it should be possible to live together in solidarity and community as the basis for civilizational and ecological survival. In the first two decades of the 21st century in particular, it is primarily artists who take up such ideas in their works and advance the discourse on possible utopias.
The exhibition and publication project Utopia. Recht auf Hoffnung, initiated by the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, aims to send a message of hope and confidence that a better and more just life for everyone on this planet is possible. It is not about a new grand design for the world, but rather about a multitude of micro-utopias that, taken together, can bring about something positive. Utopia therefore focuses primarily on artistic works, but also includes architectural designs, design objects, and examples from the applied arts that present utopian projects or ideas within various media. Mischa Kuball is represented in the exhibition by a reproduction of his 2021 work DYS(U)TOPIA.

As a medium-sized district town located between Cologne and Düsseldorf, Monheim am Rhein has an impressive collection of artworks in public spaces. International artists have realized projects here ranging from classical sculpture to light and sound art to an artificial geyser. This allows visitors to experience a wide range of what art in public spaces can be today. The main works, created between 2018 and 2024, are now presented in a catalog of the collection. This anthology focuses on cityscapes and urban designs in artistic experiments and aesthetic debates of the historical avant-garde in the 1920s and early 1930s, particularly in connection with the technical media of photography and film. Their historical preconditions, influences, and effects are recapitulated on an international level and reexamined from today's perspective. The essays and artistic contributions, including Mischa Kuball's contribution making things (very) public, also focus on contemporary projects by artists, photographers, and filmmakers for whom modern urban space, as well as the artistic experiments and methods of the avant-garde—which have become historical, so to speak—are the subject of contemporary reconstruction, (critical) re-examination, and aesthetic re-evaluation.
