Angesichts zunehmender sozialer Fragmentierung, umstrittener Geschichtsbilder und autoritärer Tendenzen in postsozialistischen Kontexten hat sich partizipative Kunst als wirkungsvolles Instrument zur Rückeroberung des öffentlichen Raums und zur Verstärkung marginalisierter Stimmen herausgestellt. Das abschließende Symposium Voicing the Commons: Participatory Art and New Public Imaginaries im Weltkunstzimmer bringt Künstler, Kuratoren, Theoretiker und Leiter von Kulturinstitutionen zusammen, um das internationale Projekt if walls could tell zu reflektieren, das sich damit befasste, wie leere weiße Wände als symbolische Strukturen der Offenheit zu Plattformen für Ausdruck, Dissens und kollektive Vorstellungskraft werden können.
Das Projekt, das sich über verschiedene städtische Kontexte erstreckte – Sarajevo, Bukarest, Skopje, Chișinău, Ljubljana, Kraljevica und Čačak –, zeigte den öffentlichen Raum als zutiefst politisches Terrain, in dem Kunst nicht nur die Gesellschaft widerspiegelt, sondern aktiv neue Formen des bürgerschaftlichen Engagements hervorbringt.
Im Mittelpunkt der Konferenz stehen mehrere zentrale Fragen:
Wie können wir uns gemeinsame Räume in gespaltenen Gesellschaften vorstellen und gestalten? Welche Rolle kann partizipative Kunst dabei spielen, unser Gefühl der Zugehörigkeit, des Eigentums und der Verantwortung im öffentlichen Raum neu zu gestalten? Aufbauend auf den Erfahrungen des Projekts if walls could tell wird partizipative Kunst als eine Praxis des Gemeinwesens untersucht – nicht nur als Mittel zur Schaffung von Kunstwerken, sondern als Prozess der Schaffung neuer sozialer Beziehungen, Solidaritäten und Formen der Fürsorge.

Plätze, Straßen, Clubs und Museen sind unser gemeinsames Wohnzimmer und manchmal auch unser Schlachtfeld. Öffentliche Räume prägen das urbane Leben, sie sind Orte des Austauschs, der Begegnung und der Auseinandersetzung.
Bei der Oktober-Ausgabe von Creative Mornings in Düsseldorf widmet sich die internationale Vortrgasreihe dem Thema: Wie können Institutionen neue Räume öffnen – physisch wie gedanklich?
Künstler Mischa Kuball geht dieser Frage nach und teilt seine Perspektive auf Licht, Raum und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe. Philipp Holstein, Kulturredakteur der Rheinischen Post, erzählt von der Magie gemeinsam erlebter Musik und davon, wie Klang öffentliche Räume verwandeln kann.

Anlässlich des 150. Jubiläums der ehemaligen Glaserei Lennarz, in dessen umgebauten Räumlichkeiten sich seit 2016 die Sammlung Philara befindet, präsentiert die Privatsammlung mit Melting Sands eine umfassende Ausstellung zu Glas in der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Dabei untersucht sie die Vereinbarkeit von Struktur und Chaos und legt einen Fokus auf Kollektivität und internationale Zusammenarbeit – allesamt Eigenschaften von Glas und seiner Herstellung.
Neben den Künstlern und Künstlerinnen Gabriele Beveridge, Gwenneth Boelens, Elio J Carranza, Kasia Fudakowski, Paul Hance, Annika Kahrs, Yaël Kempf, Katharina Maderthaner, Narges Mohammadi, Leonor Serrano Rivas, Mathilde Rosier, Jeremy Shaw, Slavs and Tatars, Jeanine Verloop, ergänzt Mischa Kuball die Ausstellung mit den Werken city thru glass ny version (1997), echo (2012), J'éclair/Voltaire (2024) und Urban Light Nr. 2 (1998/2000).

Die Nacht der Lichtkunst hat in der Hellweg-Region mittlerweile schon Tradition, denn bereits zum achten Mal bietet das Netzwerk HELLWEG – ein LICHTWEG im östlichen Ruhrgebiet ein besonderes Programm rund um die Lichtkunst.
In seinem Vortrag Irritationen, Interventionen … Licht und andere Momente im öffentlichen Raum stellt Mischa Kuball einige Projekte der letzten Jahre und Jahrzehnte vor und erläutert, wie Licht als künstlerisches Mittel genutzt werden kann, um öffentliche Räume zu transformieren und gesellschaftliche Diskurse anzustoßen.
Der Eintritt zur Veranstaltung ist frei. Wegen begrenzter Platzkapazität ist eine Anmeldung an hellweg-ein-lichtweg@gmx.de erforderlich.

In light of increasing social fragmentation, controversial interpretations of history, and authoritarian tendencies in post-socialist contexts, participatory art has proven to be an effective tool for reclaiming public space and amplifying marginalized voices. The concluding symposium Voicing the Commons: Participatory Art and New Public Imaginaries at Weltkunstzimmer brings together artists, curators, theorists, and directors of cultural institutions to reflect on the international project if walls could tell, which explored how empty white walls can become platforms for expression, dissent, and collective imagination as symbolic structures of openness.
Spanning various urban contexts—Sarajevo, Bucharest, Skopje, Chișinău, Ljubljana, Kraljevica, and Čačak—the project revealed public space as a deeply political terrain where art not only reflects society but actively generates new forms of civic engagement.
The conference will focus on several key questions:
How can we imagine and design shared spaces in divided societies? What role can participatory art play in reshaping our sense of belonging, ownership, and responsibility in public spaces? Building on the experiences of the if walls could tell project, participatory art is examined as a practice of community—not only as a means of creating artworks, but as a process of creating new social relationships, solidarities, and forms of care.

The October edition of Creative Mornings in Düsseldorf will focus on the topic: How can institutions open up new spaces—both physically and mentally?
Artist Mischa Kuball explores this question and shares his perspective on light, space, and social participation. Philipp Holstein, culture editor at the Rheinische Post, talks about the magic of shared musical experiences and how sound can transform public spaces.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the former Lennarz Glass factory, whose converted premises have housed the Philara Collection since 2016, the private collection is presenting Melting Sands, a comprehensive exhibition on glass in contemporary art. The Night of Light Art has become something of a tradition in the Hellweg region, with the HELLWEG – ein LICHTWEG network in the eastern Ruhr area offering a special program of light art events for the eighth time.
In his lecture Irritations, Interventions ... Light and Other Moments in Public Space, Mischa Kuball presents a number of projects from recent years and decades and explains how light can be used as an artistic medium to transform public spaces and stimulate social discourse.
