In seiner Projektreihe public preposition erweitert Mischa Kuball seit den 70er Jahren den Begriff des öffentlichen Raums und untersucht das Potenzial einer Kunst, die bewusst die institutionelle Sphäre verlässt. Öffentlicher Raum wird dabei nicht allein über Zugänglichkeit definiert, sondern auch über die Möglichkeit zur Partizipation. Mischa Kuballs temporäre Interventionen beziehen soziale, politische und urbane Kontexte ein und schärfen die Wahrnehmung scheinbar vertrauter Stadträume.
Mit der Ausstellung under construction / public preposition im Baukunstarchiv NRW in Dortmund eröffnet der Künstler eine Debatte über heutige Formen von Öffentlichkeit, Teilhabe und Gestaltungsspielräumen. Anfang Januar 2026 realisierte der Künstler drei öffentliche Interventionen im Dortmunder Stadtraum. Bauzäune wurden für eine Woche mit Bannern aus der Serie public preposition bespielt und anschließend im Baukunstarchiv NRW am Ostwall präsentiert. Dort werden sie durch weitere Banner und Videoprojektionen internationaler Projekte ergänzt.
Während der Eröffnung am 15. Januar werden die Installationen performativ erweitert und im Laufe der Laufzeit kontinuierlich ergänzt – unter Mitwirkung von Studierenden der Fachhochschule Dortmund unter der Leitung von Achim Mohné. Vertiefend begleitet ein Symposium zur Rolle von Kunst im öffentlichen Raum am 6. März 2026 das Projekt.

Mischa Kuballs Rauminstallation platon's mirror (2011 ff.) wird erstmalig in der Sammlung des Kunstpalasts ausgestellt.
platon’s mirror basiert auf einem der einflussreichsten Texte der europäischen Literatur: Platons Höhlengleichnis. In ihm wird die Unterscheidung zwischen zwei Formen der Wirklichkeit formuliert: der sichtbaren Realität und der (wahren) Realität der Ideen.
In zugleich einfachen und höchst effektiven Anordnungen mit Projektoren und reflektierenden Silberfolien, Fotografien und Videos schafft Kuball einerseits Räume, die als Gleichnisse der Platonischen Höhlensituation zu verstehen sind, andererseits übersetzt er in seinen Fotografien und Videos das komplexe Verhältnis von Lichtquelle, Spiegelung, Schattenriss und Abbild in scheinbar endlos zu erweiternde Mediationsstufen, auf denen sich die Wirklichkeit als die Wirklichkeit ihrer Reflexion immer erneut konstituiert.

In his project series public preposition, Mischa Kuball has been expanding the concept of public space since the 1970s and exploring the potential of art that deliberately leaves the institutional sphere. Public space is defined not only by accessibility, but also by the possibility of participation. Mischa Kuball's temporary interventions incorporate social, political, and urban contexts and sharpen the perception of seemingly familiar urban spaces.
With the exhibition under construction / public preposition at the Baukunstarchiv NRW in Dortmund, the artist opens a debate on contemporary forms of public space, participation, and creative freedom. At the beginning of January 2026, the artist realized three public interventions in Dortmund's urban space. Construction fences were covered with banners from the public preposition series for a week and then presented at the Baukunstarchiv NRW on Ostwall. There, they are supplemented by additional banners and video projections of international projects.
During the opening on January 15, the installations will be expanded with performances and continuously supplemented throughout the exhibition period—with the participation of students from the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts under the direction of Achim Mohné. The project will be accompanied by an in-depth symposium on the role of art in public space on March 6, 2026.

Mischa Kuball's room installation platon's mirror (2011 ff.) is being exhibited for the first time in the Kunstpalast collection.
platon's mirror is based on one of the most influential texts in European literature: Plato's allegory of the cave. In it, the distinction between two forms of reality is formulated: visible reality and the (true) reality of ideas.
In arrangements that are both simple and highly effective, using projectors and reflective silver foil, photographs, and videos, Kuball creates spaces that can be understood as parables of Plato's cave situation. At the same time, in his photographs and videos, he translates the complex relationship between light source, reflection, silhouette, and image into seemingly endless stages of mediation, in which reality is constantly reconstituted as the reality of its reflection.
