Archive sind häufig als starre und verstaubte Orte in einem kulturellen Gedächtnis eingeschrieben. Sie beherbergen Kulturgut, welches für die Langzeit konservatorisch gesichert wird. Der Ort an sich bleibt jedoch der Öffentlichkeit meistens verschlossen oder ist nur unter bestimmten Bedingungen zugänglich. Das Depot des Filmmuseums wird sukzessive durch unterschiedliche Formate aktiviert, in einen neuen Kontext gestellt und durch künstlerische Aktionen befragt.
Mischa Kuball nimmt sich diesem Öffnungsprozess an, befragt ihn künstlerisch auf seine Weise. Sein Projekt archiv // archiv bespielt unterschiedliche Räume im Depot. In dieser Installation wird es audiovisuell, fotografisch und filmisch dokumentiert. Die entstehende komplexe Dokumentation wird als Objekt in die Bestände und zukünftig in die Dauerausstellung integriert und bleibt so als Intervention dauerhaft in der Sammlung des Museums sichtbar. Gleichzeitig ist sie einzigartig und exklusiv. Sie bleibt eine direkte "Besetzung" des Ortes und verbindet sich mit den Beständen, wodurch Mischa Kuball direkten Bezug auf die Archivierungspraxis des Museums nimmt.

Performance-Wochenende zum Abschluss von Professor Mischa Kuball an der KHM

Zum Abschluss von Mischa Kuballs 19-jähriger Lehrtätigkeit als Professor für Public Art an der KHM versammelt THE END Alumni und aktuell Studierende des Seminars "urban stage" zu einem Performance-Wochenende mit Ausstellung im Kölnischen Kunstverein.
THE END zeigt neben Performances und Videos auch Malerei, Fotografie, Skulptur, VR- und Klangarbeiten, in welche performative Elemente eingeschrieben werden. Die 30 ausgestellten Arbeiten widmen sich thematisch den Krisen aus den letzten Jahrzehnten. Sie erstrecken sich vom Riphahnsaal, über das Kino, dem Apostelnklosterplatz bis hin in die Zwischenräume des Kunstvereins und versinnbildlichen die Brüchigkeit von Gegenwart oder entwickeln dystopische Analysen und Grenzzustände.
Das Zusammentreffen von KHM-Alumni mit den aktuell Studierenden bildet bewusst einen generationsübergreifenden Abschluss von Mischa Kuball und seiner Lehrtätigkeit seit 2007 an der KHM. Das Zusammenkommen erfolgt auf Einladung von Mischa Kuball in enger Kooperation mit Valérie Knoll, der Direktorin des Kölnischen Kunstvereins. Das Performance-Wochenende wird von den Absolventinnen Maja Funke und Helin Korkmaz kuratiert.

Archives are often perceived as rigid and dusty places embedded in cultural memory. They house cultural heritage that is preserved for the long term. The space itself, however, usually remains closed to the public or is accessible only under certain conditions. The Film Museum’s storage facility is gradually being brought to life through various formats, placed in a new context, and explored through artistic interventions.
Mischa Kuball engages with this process of opening up, artistically interrogating it in his own way. His project archiv // archiv occupies various spaces within the storage facility. This installation is documented through audiovisual, photographic, and filmic means. The resulting complex documentation will be integrated as an object into the collection and, in the future, into the permanent exhibition, thus remaining permanently visible in the museum’s collection as an intervention. At the same time, it is unique and exclusive. It remains a direct “occupation” of the site and connects with the collection, through which Mischa Kuball makes a direct reference to the museum’s archiving practices.

Performance weekend to mark the end of Professor Mischa Kuball's tenure at KHM

To mark the end of Mischa Kuball's 19-year tenure as professor of public art at the KHM, THE END brings together alumni and current students of the “urban stage” seminar for a performance weekend with an exhibition at the Kölnischer Kunstverein.
In addition to performances and videos, THE END also features painting, photography, sculpture, VR, and sound works that incorporate performative elements. The 30 works on display are thematically dedicated to the crises of recent decades. They extend from the Riphahnsaal, through the cinema, the Apostelnklosterplatz, to the interstices of the Kunstverein, symbolizing the fragility of the present or developing dystopian analyses and borderline states.
The meeting of KHM alumni with current students deliberately forms a cross-generational conclusion to Mischa Kuball's teaching career at the KHM since 2007. The gathering takes place at the invitation of Mischa Kuball in close cooperation with Valérie Knoll, director of the Kölnischer Kunstverein. The performance weekend is curated by graduates Maja Funke and Helin Korkmaz.
